A selection of film classics by the Kyiv Critics’ Week. These are six comedies from 1929 to 1994. The list includes films well known to Ukrainians as well as recent discoveries that have been unavailable for watching for a long time. The program was created in collaboration with the Dovzhenko Center.
National premieres of new Ukrainian films that have already become international hits. The first Ukrainian feature film in the International Competition of Sundance, this year's Cannes participant, and the winner of the Venice Film Festival.
Six Ukrainian premieres of hits to date in Ukrainian and British cinematographies. The curators of the festival chose three films, which best give an idea of the existing situation of British cinema. On the other hand, a team of film critics from Great Britain chose three Ukrainian films that reflect the domestic film process, with its genre and auteur searches.
The international section traditionally combines fresh hits from the world's largest film festivals. This year, seven films from the Cannes and Berlinale programs were included in the selection.
The year 2022 becomes the year of a fundamental break — not only in Ukraine but also in the world. And we are not objects or passive observers in this process. We are the gamechangers. So this year, our retrospective program is inspired by Ukraine as a gamechanger.
Gamechangers is a program dedicated to films and directors who have made the world look at their countries and their cinema in a different way. Iran, Denmark, New Zealand, Romania and Taiwan will not be the first countries that the average viewer will consider in connection with cinema. But the films we will present in the program have changed the game, including not only these filmmakers, but entire communities associated with them, in the big world of cinema.
The sixth film of the retrospective program will be The Name: Carmen by Jean-Luc Godard – in memory of the outstanding director who became for many the personification of a permanent revolution and inspired to change cinema.
