A story of forbidden love based on two folk legends of the 15th–16th centuries—one Ukrainian, the other Crimean Tatar. Abandoned by his comrades while escaping captivity, a Cossack is left facing death. Unexpectedly, he is saved by a Tatar woman. On the border between two hostile worlds, love is born: the Tatar secretly marries the Cossack and gives him the Turkic name Mamay. But when their secret is revealed, fate separates the lovers once again.
