The war against communists in the Caucasus. Ukrainian Mykola Barabash is wounded. He was rescued, cured, and fell in love with a Chechen woman named Djalma. After the war, Mykola and Djalma returned to their native village. Some of the villagers, who are portrayed in a biased way, were hostile to the young Muslim woman, a "non-Christian soul."
