Brazil, the near future. The government relocates elderly citizens to isolated colonies so that younger generations can focus on productivity and development. Teresa, nearly 80, refuses to accept this imposed fate. Instead of surrendering, she sets out on a journey through the Amazon to fulfill one last wish before losing her freedom.
A drama of emancipation disguised as a dystopia set in the near future of Brazil, where older people who retire are segregated and sent into reservations. The main character, Teresa, refuses to live by imposed rules and instead strives to live her life the way she chooses. On a surreal journey through the Amazon, in search of liberation from society’s oppressive norms, she encounters strange figures — but most importantly, she finds herself.
Older people rarely appear on the big screen as protagonists. And when they do, they are often portrayed as tragic figures (take Haneke’s Amour, for instance). Gabriel Mascaro breaks this trope by presenting Teresa as sharp, determined, and full of agency.
