From the producers Pedro and Agustín Almodóvar.
Luis, his son, and their faithful dog traverse the Moroccan desert in search of their missing daughter. When they join a group of ravers bound for a final party deep in the Sahara, they embark on a hellish journey through endless sands. The merciless desert forces them to re-examine their lives.
Shot on 16-mm film, this fourth and now most successful feature by Spanish director Óliver Laxe was in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. Inspired by Nietzsche’s quote, “I would believe only in a god who could dance,” Laxe has crafted a story of apocalypse-awareness and a metaphysical journey, steeped in techno music, corporeality, loss, and a sense of something primal. The film is wryly called a chamber/arthouse version of Mad Max. Through its rave elements, which permeate the whole film, mythological motifs emerge — the title Sirāt in Islamic culture refers to the slender bridge over hell one must attempt to cross to reach paradise.
